A lot of influential people in the start up community are on the Start Up Visa bandwagon. I empathize with their sentiments. However, I see ways to abuse the program-virtually every government program gets abused in one way or another.
The video is a bit long. The economic concepts in it are extremely elegant-but they require some in depth explanation.
Gary Becker would agree with the sentiments of Start Up Visa as well, but puts some interesting economic points on it. I originally heard this lecture at The University of Chicago Brown Bag lunch sponsored by my HPA co-founder Vishal Verma. A shockwave went through the room when he illustrated his points. It’s very thought provoking.
What’s also interesting to me is that the Fresh Water School of economics is coming up with all the ground breaking ideas. The Salt Water school is stuck in the mud messing around with government programs and taxes.
As an economist, I would think it extremely liberating and entrepreneurial to break out of the traditional mould and become a part of the fresh water school.
